“‘Farewell’ to Twitter brand: Musk hints platform will change its name and logo

Quit the little blue bird? Eccentric entrepreneur and Twitter owner Elon Musk indicated on Saturday night that he is considering a name and logo change for his social network.

“We will soon say goodbye to the Twitter brand (in French, editor’s note) and, in turn, to all birds,” he first tweeted, before suggesting the new logo would be an “X.”

He pinned a video posted by a user of the platform to his Twitter profile showing the current Twitter logo, a blue bird, replaced by a flashing X.

“If a good enough X logo is posted tonight, we’ll post it around the world tomorrow,” he said.

After buying Twitter last year for $44 billion, Elon Musk changed the company’s name to “X Corp” in April 2023 and regularly touts his nefarious project to turn it into a versatile application with financial services like China’s WeChat.

In response to a question from a user who asked if Twitter could be accessed from an x.com address, Elon Musk replied: “Of course”.

X.com is the name and website of an online bank founded by a businessman that later became PayPal’s online payment service.

The name change comes at a time when Twitter is struggling, with Elon Musk laying off half its staff and ad revenue halving, according to the billionaire.

The social network faces several competing apps, including new threads launched by Meta.

Asked by another netizen, Mr. Musk suggested tweets be called Xs after the renaming.
