“The COVID-19 pandemic has made us aware of the importance of increasing our food autonomy. It is our good fortune to be able to calculate different products at competitive prices. We are contributing not only to the financial health of businesses, but also to the economic recovery of our cities and towns all over Quebec, “Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Minister Andre Lamontagne said in a press release on Saturday.
The $ 12 Challenge aims to boost the economy and the biofood sector, but to show that “in the majority of cases, consumers find it easier to find a Quebec equivalent to an imported product.”
It was launched in November 2020 after the Legalt government announced an investment of $ 157 million to increase food self-sufficiency in the province.
According to figures released by Quebec, the GDP of the Quebec biofood sector is $ 29 billion, representing 8% of the province’s GDP and more than 532,500 jobs.
In 2019, half of Quebec’s consumer and food company purchases came from Quebec suppliers.
