“They understand that their brain works differently.”
Among her distinguished musical careers – as a solo artist and a forerunner of No Doubt – and her position as one of NBC’s judges Vani, Gwen Stephanie Megastar for a while.
Stephanie’s three sons also shared with ex-husband Gavin Rosdale and in a recent episode Jane Lowe Show, She revealed that her sons found out she was dyslexic after having trouble reading.
“One thing I discovered by having children was that I had dyslexia – there are things that happen to everyone and mine is the same,” she explained.
“And I think a lot of the problems I have or even the decisions I make arise from it, because now the kids – obviously, all of this is genetic – they have some problems.”
But Stephanie stressed that her children are getting plenty of support at school with “unbelievable teachers”. “They don’t have to be ashamed of it. They understand that their brain works differently. All our brains do that, you know what I mean?”
Since she “failed in school,” Stephanie also reflects on how this innovation changed her perspective on her own struggles. “I’m a good girl. I did no bad things. It was very difficult for me to work in a school square box that everyone should understand.”
“And my brain didn’t work like that; it still doesn’t work. But it works differently, it’s a gift that other people can’t do.”
And Stephanie elaborated on that last point, about how she was making music with No Doubt and helped her overcome her struggles with dyslexia.
“At the time, I wrote that whole record without even knowing how to write a song and kept it literally my whole life for everyone to hear. And then I’m still on the band. [No Doubt band member Tony Kanal], Who do I depend on because of my dyslexia. “
“I do not know, but I do not believe in myself at the time. When I write a song or come on stage, it’s very appropriate and the only thing that feels right is the right thing for me.”
Stephanie’s experience is a reminder that we all need to be different – and we should all follow our creative joy.
