He takes the wheel at the age of 9 as a savior

A man knocked unconscious by a bee sting while driving on a 90km/h highway was saved by the extraordinary reflexes of his 9-year-old son, who took the wheel to bring the vehicle to safety.

“There are so many things that can happen. I’m really proud of the way my son reacted, it could have ended a lot worse,” Chantale Ouellet said the day after the near-tragedy.

Her spouse, Charles Goulet, spent the afternoon selling honey with his son Emile on Saturday in his orchard at Domaine Pires in Bromont. But while leaving, the 40-year-old man was stung by a bee at ear level.

After getting into his car, Mr Goulet contacted his wife via the hands-free system to say he was feeling unwell while driving home, just three kilometers away. But he did not finish his conversation.

“Suddenly, everything changed, I lost consciousness. My son said my eyes were open, but I wasn’t responding anymore,” said the father of the family, who has never reacted this way to a bee sting.

But the car was still moving on the Pierre-Laporte road, where the limit is 90 km/h, and it was going dangerously in the opposite lane. At that point, little Emil, sitting in the back of the car, took matters into his own hands.

It was on the shoulder in the opposite direction, but the father and his son finished their race in complete safety. All without any dents and very minor scratches on the vehicle.

Moments later, Chantale Ouellet, who is allergic to bee venom, arrives on the scene with an EpiPen. Her partner woke up before being taken to hospital.

For the couple, their son’s experience with motor vehicles saved Mr. Goulet that day. The boy has been learning to ride a “side-by-side” type of ATV on their garden plot for several years.

“I acted without really thinking,” Emil said when asked what prompted him to act with such calmness.

“Suddenly something happens to me that he wants to come with me to the orchard. He was there at the right time, he was kind of my guardian angel,” Mr. Goulet concluded.
