“The Federal Department of Energy has given presidential approval to the New England Clean Energy Connect (NECEC) transmission line project,” the state-owned company said. All control powers required for the realization of the project have been obtained in the United States ”.

Presidential approval is the latest in a series of long-standing regulatory approvals that Hydro and its U.S. partner Avangrid must obtain before starting interconnector construction.

“Getting presidential approval is great news,” Sophie Brochu, president and CEO of the state-owned company, commented in a press release. Like the pandemic, weather emergencies have no boundaries. This interconnection project is a big step in our decarbonization efforts ”.

The project will allow Hydro-Quebec to transport 1,200 MW of hydropower to New England, Lewiston, Maine and generate hundreds of millions in revenue. This project is subject to the approval of the Quebec component of the interconnection.
