London | The husband of Najanin Jaghari-Ratcliffe, an Iranian-British man who has been in the hands of Iranian justice since 2016, has suggested that British authorities should be prudent in the fight for his release, with the grief of compromising on a possible release. In early March.
“The State Department informed us this week about threats against Nazanin and his family members if we were promoting a release date,” the free Nazanin Twitter account maintained by her husband Richard Ratcliffe said Sunday.
“We believe that transparency is the best defense against abuse,” Richard Ratcliffe said in a series of tweets.
The State Department, which contacted the AFP, has so far not responded to requests.
Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was arrested along with her daughter in April 2016 in Iran, where she visited her family, who was then sentenced to five years in prison, which her family said would end on March 7.
This employee of the Thomson Reuters Foundation – the philanthropic arm of the Canadian-British news agency of the same name – who is accused of trying to overthrow the regime in her disputed Tehran – is currently under the electronic bracelet.
She was released from Evin prison in Tehran last spring due to the coronavirus pandemic, after which she was placed under house arrest with her parents.
She is accused of campaigning against the regime in connection with a second legal process in Iran, but the trial was adjourned in early November, hoping to withdraw the proceedings without informing her of new dates.
She now hopes to return to the UK in five weeks, by the end of her five-year prison sentence, according to her family.
“If anything happens to Nazanin and her family, or if she is not sent back to the UK on March 7, there must be consequences,” Ratcliffe added.
