Haitian mathematician Ruben Louis won first prize in the best poster competition at the Poisson 2024 conference in Naples, Italy.
Reuben Lewis himself announced the distinction on his Facebook page on July 14, 2024, by sharing a photo of himself surrounded by four other participants, along with the caption: “Winner of the Best Poster Contest 2024 | FISH 2024 Conference. »
The Poisson 2024 conference, an unmissable event for experts in Poisson geometry, took place in Naples from July 8 to 12. The event highlighted state-of-the-art work, particularly in the poster session where Reuben Lewis was recognized for his work entitled “On Nash Resolution of (Singular) Lie Algebraids”.
A fundamental field of study is Poisson geometry Mathematical Physics A few more Differential geometryStudies structures on differential types that generalize the Poisson brackets known from classical mechanics.
A former student of the Ecole Normale Supérieure of the State University of Haiti, Reuben Louis earned a master's degree in mathematics at the University of Poitiers in France before completing his doctorate at the University of Lorraine. His thesis, “Universal Higher Algebras of Singular Spaces and Their Symmetries”, was awarded the 2023 Thesis Prize.
According to Reuben Lewis, his poster summarizes his recent article on “Nash Resolution of Singular Lie Algebraids”. “This work uses techniques from algebraic geometry to introduce a new approach to solving singularities in differential geometry. In particular, this method “revisits methods developed in recent construction based on partitioning a smooth manifold along a unique set of leaf sheets. This project is a logical continuation of my doctoral thesis conducted at the University of Lorraine in Metz, France,” explained Ruben Louis Loup Haiti.
According to him, what makes his poster unique is the originality of approach and clarity of presentation. “I used clear and accurate visualizations to explain complex concepts, making it easy for the audience to understand key ideas. Additionally, I was able to present concrete results from my research highlighting the practical impact of these constructs in various fields.”
Reuben Lewis expressed his satisfaction with the announcement of his victory, highlighting the rich exchanges with other researchers in Poisson geometry at the event.
“Participating in plenary sessions and special workshops gave me the opportunity to deepen my knowledge and get inspiration for future projects,” added the mathematician. He has also been invited to present his research at prestigious laboratories including KU Leuven University in Belgium and Utrecht University in the Netherlands.
He emphasized the importance of his studies at the École Normale Supérieure d'Haïti, which provided him with a strong theoretical foundation in mathematics and the necessary academic rigor.
“I faced several significant challenges, including limited access to academic resources and research opportunities in my country,” he revealed to us. “To overcome these obstacles, I persevered in seeking opportunities abroad. The valuable support of my professors and academic networks allowed me to benefit from scholarships and participate in research programs.”
Reuben Louis encourages young Haitians to believe in their abilities and persevere in their educational journey. “Participating in academic networks, including the use of online resources and digital libraries internationally, is essential,” he emphasized, “Online resources have played a vital role in my mathematics studies do so today.”
His advice to Haitian students: “Actively applying for scholarship and internship programs in Haiti and abroad is essential to broaden your horizons and gain enriching experiences.”
Despite the current challenges in Haiti, Lewis believes that determination and continued efforts are needed to contribute to the country's educational development and succeed.
