Justice is the foundation of our society

Justice is the foundation of our society

Our justice system is in shambles everywhere. Although it affects our democracy as a whole, it is only a touch point in the programs of various parties.

When Denise Coderre insisted this week that Valerie Plante’s administration “looks like she’s breathing,” it’s easy to see the frustration of the man who beat the dust before her during the last municipal election.

In fact, during the election campaign, Plante promised to increase the number of police officers in Montreal to 250. As soon as the campaign ended, she began to retreat. Coderre is not entirely wrong.

No one is fooled in Montreal. Since the beginning of the year, there have been 75 murders or attempted murders with guns in Montreal.

Neglect of this critical issue at City Hall has fueled public insecurity in Montreal. This “I don’t care” is compounded by the broader crisis in our justice system in Quebec.

A system at risk

We live in a society of laws. Our relations between citizens and with the state are governed by law.

To enforce the law, we rely on an entire system of police, prosecutors and courts essential to the proper functioning of our democratic institutions.

At the apex of this system are the Minister of Justice and the Attorney General. Unfortunately, Simon Jolin-Barrett still has his nose in many other cases and as a result, he has presided over the worst collapse of our justice system in Quebec history.

Quarrels after quarrels with the judiciary, authority and independence he does not respect, he constantly despises the decisions of the court, he does as he pleases. He mixes identity, linguistic and political questions with legal and constitutional questions in his pot and the results are catastrophic.

He constructs grand theories that make no sense, but is unable to work out the division of small claims in a regular timeframe.

The decline of our justice system in Quebec has been accelerated by its inefficiency and negligence.

Abandoned by the Montreal CAQ

Legault and Jolin-Barrett are disgusted by the most distinctive aspects of Montreal. Cultural, linguistic and religious diversity are in the crosshairs of the CAQ, which infuses votes in the regions by demonizing the metropolis and its specific characteristics.

Legault has no votes in Montreal, and although the metropolitan area represents half of Quebec’s population, he largely leaves it out, especially on the public security file.

People can easily see that our education system is seriously flawed and the health system is completely at risk: everyone is consulting schools and hospitals for themselves or their loved ones.

With the legal system, it is even more obscure, contacts are rare.

This week’s murders remind us of the effects on our society and our lives when we don’t focus.
