Mandatory vaccination: Over 350 layoffs in Toronto Public Transit

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) confirmed to Queen City Media on Monday that it had laid off more than 350 unvaccinated employees of the Toronto Transit System last November.

A total of 354 workers lost their jobs in the network. “It represents about 2% of TTC employees and all of them have left since November 21,” company spokesman Stuart Green said.

The union representing TTC employees, ATU Local 113, opposed the “bad and unjust” dismissals and believed that alternative measures, such as regularly testing workers, could be introduced.

“TTC is already facing a labor shortage that will intensify in the coming weeks. The layoffs have led to a reduction in service, which has fined our customers, many of whom are low-income frontline workers,” union president Marvin Alfred protested in a press release issued last Saturday.

Toronto’s public organizations have so far been unequivocal with their vaccinated employees. Last week, the city announced a total of 461 layoffs, or nearly 1.4% of employees. Toronto police have suspended more than 200 employees, including 117 police officers, by the end of November.
