New pirate attack on Iranian tanker fails

Tehran | ISNA news agency reported on Tuesday that hackers had attempted to attack an Iranian tanker in the Gulf of Aden for the second time in two weeks.

The tanker was on its way to the strategic strait of Bob-el Mandeb on Monday when six pirates in four boats tried to seize it, but had to flee after warning shots from the Iranian navy, military sources said.

On October 16, pirates attacked a convoy of two Iranian oil tankers already in the Gulf of Aden. They fled when the Iranian navy escorting the tankers shot them.

Many tankers are used to travel to Europe via the Suez Canal north of the Bob El-Mandeb Strait, which connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.

The Iranian navy has been patrolling the area since 2008 to protect containers and tankers chartered by Iran or other countries.

Attacks are usually the work of Somali pirates. According to the British Maritime Safety Agency (UKMTO), their frequency has dropped in recent years thanks to security efforts deployed in international waters.
