New York fire: UBER driver stops his race to help residents

An UBER driver has been called a ‘hero’ by the owner of a ride-hailing company after he stopped running to help residents caught in a building fire in New York, CNN reported.

Fritz Sam was driving his passenger through Brooklyn to the airport Wednesday morning when he saw a four-story building engulfed in flames.

With flames coming from the window of one of the apartments and no emergency services on the scene, the driver decided to park and come to help people in the building.

The passenger, Jemima Vee, immediately followed him and some of them started to come out, alerting the residents that the fire was progressing.

Knowing that there might be people in the building, the driver did not hesitate to enter the building. As the fire engulfed the second floor accommodation, Fritz was able to navigate the building and help the remaining occupants.

Firefighters arrived at the scene shortly after evacuating the last occupant. After making sure everyone is safe, the driver continues his race to mark the end of the journey.

“I spoke to this Uber hero – he was grateful that someone helped him move his car – when he crashed into a building,” the official tweeted on Thursday.

Officials told the media that no one was injured in the fire and the investigation is ongoing.
