In response to Canadian sanctions targeting Russian journalists and actors in October, Russia announced on Monday that it was banning 100 Canadians from entering its territory, including actor Jim Carrey and several journalists.

“The decision was made in response to the establishment by the regime of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of sanctions against Russia’s leaders, its politicians, its parliamentarians (…), journalists and cultural figures,” the Russian ministry explained. Department of External Affairs in a press release.
Actor and comedian Jim Carrey, 60, was among those banned from entering Russia.
The list includes, in addition to the Hollywood star, CTV’s Paul Workman and CBC’s Margaret Evans, Communications Security Establishment head Caroline Xavier, as well as several Canadian celebrities of Ukrainian origin.
According to the statement, Moscow accused Moscow of “direct involvement in creating an aggressive anti-Russian policy.”
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, Canada has imposed sanctions on more than 1,400 individuals and entities based in Russia, Belarus or Ukraine.
In October, Canada imposed sanctions on Russian journalists and media deemed “complicit in disinformation,” particularly around the conflict in Ukraine.
