A woman has been sentenced to prison for stealing more than $400,000 from fundraising site GoFundMe claiming to donate to a homeless person.

Katelyn McClure, 29, of New Jersey, USA, was charged with second-degree robbery after she said she would help Johnny Babbitt Jr., a homeless man.

The full story of this fundraising campaign is that Katelyn and her husband Mark, then on the highway with no gas, and being helped by homeless people with no money to pay for gas, gave them everything he had.

In return, the couple started a GoFundMe to give him back his own coin.

14,000 donors and $367,000 (after fees) later, the scammers were unmasked after buying a BMW, Louis Vuitton bags, a trip to Las Vegas for New Year’s Eve, among other things.

Babbitt Jr., whose image was used, said he received $75,000 and sued the fundraiser to keep the rest of the money.

Katelyn McClure was eventually sentenced to one year and one day in prison.
