An investigation by Canada’s Transportation Safety Board has been launched after a fire broke out Friday on a ferry carrying more than 200 people from Nova Scotia to Prince Edward Island.
“Fires continue to burn in the engine room area and inside the exhaust funnels of Holiday Island, with smoke coming from the funnel of the ship,” the ship’s vice president said in a statement Saturday. Northumberland Ferries, Don Cormier.
The Canadian Coast Guard was called in to monitor the situation.
“The tug Switzer Bedford, which has some firefighting capability, was able to apply boundary cooling to the sides of the ship and car decks. The environmental response agency, SIMEC, was able to deploy a boom around the ship as a precaution,” Mr Cormier said.
In this regard, while the Coast Guard mentioned in the afternoon that the rescue operation was over, the remaining crew members on the plane were evacuated on Friday evening.
So far, no signs of contamination have been reported near the ship, which has also been reported.
More than 80 vehicles boarded the ferry after a fire broke out on a ferry connecting Caribou Harbor and Wood Islands Harbor just after 11 a.m. Friday. No injuries were reported at the scene and all pets were also evacuated.
“We are doing everything we can to recover these vehicles and their contents as quickly as possible. […] Our customer service teams continue to work with affected customers with a focus on getting them back to their homes,” said Mr. Cormier.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Twitter that he was “relieved” to know the passengers were safe and sound.

Hence the ferry service was suspended for the weekend.
