Strong (hiring) climate in Quebec in early 2023

Winter has been mild so far, but employers in Quebec “expect a strong hiring environment in the first quarter of 2023,” according to ManpowerGroup’s latest employment outlook survey.

“Rich Hiring Speed”

According to data from this barometer, 48% of Quebec employers expect to hire staff in the next quarter, while 12% anticipate a decline in their workforce.

After accounting for seasonal variations, Quebec’s net employment forecast for the first quarter of 2023 stands at +34%, up nine percentage points from forecasts announced in the last quarter of 2022, but down. Last year period.

The net employment forecast (NEP) is derived from the percentage of employers who plan to hire, from which we subtract the percentage who anticipate staff reductions.

In short, “Quebec will experience a prosperous rate of job placements in the next few months,” Anne-Marie Lanthier from the Manpower office in Montreal summarized in a press release.

Under Canadian Skies

All of Canada has a similar climate. At the Canadian level, the net employment forecast for the first quarter of 2023 is set at +34%, which is three points higher than in the fourth quarter of 2022, but three points lower than the same period last year.

A ridge of high pressure is camped over the northern territories, where net employment is expected to peak at +64%, ahead of the west at +35%.

Optimism is only clouded in the Prairies and Atlantic regions, both of which have net employment estimates of +33%. The barometer looks good in Ontario, where the ratio is +32% for the first quarter of 2022.

Hot areas

Across Canada, the finance and real estate sector and the manufacturing and materials sector were the fastest growing, with employment opportunities up 44%.

They were followed by information technology (+40%), transport, logistics and automotive (+39%) and communication services (+38%).

Optimism is matched by size

Note, however, that the size of companies more or less blushes the lenses through which they contemplate the financial horizon.

With a +43% hiring outlook, organizations with 250+ employees are twice as optimistic as small businesses with fewer than 10 employees (+19%) and 10-49 employees (+23%).

At other latitudes

For the purposes of its study, Manpower surveyed more than 1,000 employers across Canada.

With a net employment estimate of +34%, Canada ranks third among the 41 countries in which a similar survey was conducted, behind Panama (+39%) and Costa Rica (+35%).

The United States is in ninth place with +29%.
