Supreme Court allows Trump's tax returns to be turned over to Congress

The United States Supreme Court on Tuesday authorized the transfer of Donald Trump’s tax returns to Congress, rejecting a final appeal by the former Republican president.

For three years, the House of Representatives, which was in the hands of Democrats until January, has been demanding documents transferred by the billionaire to tax authorities between 2015 and 2020.

But, unlike all tenants of the White House since the 1970s, Donald Trump has always refused to publish his tax returns, and he has fought hard in the courts to block Congress’s request.

After several episodes, the Federal Court of Appeal authorized the tax authorities to transfer these documents to a House committee at the end of October. The real estate mogul filed an urgent appeal to the Supreme Court of the United States to block the transfer.

It halted transmission of the documents on November 1, pending a decision on the merits.

After receiving arguments from both sides, she finally rejected Donald Trump’s request on Tuesday. True to its practices, its motivations are not explained.

Although the former president revised it in depth, the high court placed several hurdles on the matter and specifically authorized the transfer of financial documents to a New York judge investigating his affairs in 2020.

The lack of transparency of Donald Trump, who has turned his wealth into a campaign argument, has fueled years of speculation about his fortune or potential conflicts.

However, it is far from certain that the transfer of his tax archives to Congress will lift the curtain on the septuagenarian affair, having just announced his 2024 presidential bid.

The commission, which called for these tax returns to develop ethics rules on the president’s dealings, should not make them public. In January, Republicans will regain control of it and possibly abandon the task.
