The Allstom plant in Sorrel-Tracy will be closed

The Alstom train plant in Sorrel-Tracy will close its doors later this year due to a shortage of about 90 employees of the plant.

Workers met Wednesday to hear the bad news, confirmed Toussa Hricke, a French multinational spokeswoman who recently bought Bombardier’s transportation division.

The plant’s operations are consolidated at facilities in Saint-Bruno-de-Monterville, Monterogie, and La Pocatier in Boss-Saint-Laurent, which until yesterday belonged to Bombardier Transport and are today operated by Alstom.

The Sorrell-Tracy site was primarily used for the manufacture of bogies or carriages for the Montreal Metro’s Azure trains, while the trains came from the La Pocatier plant as part of a partnership between Bombardier and Allstom. Alstom has been leasing the space specifically for the deal since 2013, although it has called on employees to work on transportation projects for Toronto and Ottawa.

“Despite many attempts, we were unable to increase the workload, which initially extended the life cycle of this workshop,” said Ms. Hrykey.

One-third of employees have so far been able to transfer to other positions, and Alstom is looking at what it can do with others. “We are doing everything we can to replace them and divert them to other locations,” the spokesman said, confirming that 140 locations currently need to be replaced in Alstom, Quebec.
