One serving per day is harmful
To reach these conclusions, the researchers recruited 116,087 volunteers between the ages of 35 and 70 between 2003 and 2016. 10 years later, 467 participants developed inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) (90 Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis). “After adjustment for potential confusion, high consumption of ultra-processed foods is associated with a higher risk of IBD”, Report scientists.
Serving just one ultra-processed food per day increases your risk of inflammatory bowel disease by 67%. The number increases to 82% if we eat 5 times a day.
What are the most dangerous foods?
Various subgroups of ultra-processed foods, including soft drinks, refined sugary foods, salty snacks and processed meats, are associated with higher risk rates for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. In contrast, consumption of white meat, red meat, dairy products, carbs, fruits, vegetables and legumes was not associated with high incidence of IBD.
“More studies are needed to identify risk factors in processed foods that are responsible for the communities observed in our study”, The research authors concluded.
