Walmart abandons its $100M project in Wadreuil-Dorion: “We decided to accelerate upgrades to our existing network”

Vaudreuil-Dorion will eventually no longer have the $100 million order processing center from American giant Walmart it announced last year, as the American multinational now prefers to modernize eight stores on Quebec soil, the company announced Thursday.

“Instead of opening the previously announced distribution center in Vaudreuil-Dorion, we have decided to accelerate upgrades to our existing network,” confirmed the statement. Newspaper Steve Azoulay, Walmart spokesman.

“By the end of our next fiscal year, we plan to invest about $100 million to modernize eight stores in the province,” he said. The decision by the multinational was first reported by VIVA MEDIA on Wednesday.

A $100 million project

In September 2022, News magazine Walmart reportedly plans to build its first $100 million order processing center at the MRC of Vaudreuil-Soulanges, with 225 jobs.

asked News magazine, the city of Vaudreuil-Dorion could not provide details of the canceled project on its territory. The City said it had recently learned the news from Development Vaudreuil-Soulanges.

“Our organization does not financially support large-scale projects like this,” its executive director Joan Brunet said when asked.

A global giant

Walmart projects profits of around $16 billion in 2023. The company employs more than 1.6 million people.

Since 1994, Walmart says it has invested $120 million in its stores here, buying $3.5 billion worth of products from 480 Quebec suppliers last year alone.

Last August, the American giant announced the opening of its first new store in Quebec in ten years. More than $20 million has been invested in this new branch, which has everything from a grocery store in the midst of inflation.
