What is left of our biased system?

A month ago, we said Francois Legault was almighty. His re-election is a formality. There must be some truth in that, because after a disastrous campaign, with a haystack strategy, if the polls don’t deceive us, he will get a huge majority.

This is largely thanks to the fragmentation of the opposition, which corresponds to Quebec’s fragmentation into foreign political currents, and to our voting system, which becomes erratic when we go from two-party to multi-party.

Legault

We have forgotten how unfit François Legault was as prime minister, a blundering politician who repeatedly found himself in trouble.

What is the situation of opposition parties?

The Liberal Party is no longer a great alternative party in Quebec, but an English-speaking community party that can remain. Dominique Anglade’s gesticulations and semi-improvised dances did nothing to help, provoking cynicism among the Francophones of his party.

The Conservative Party, for its part, made surprising progress, but could not move beyond the protest stage. Eric Duhaime made it into his film, finally. It is an angry right rather than a programmatic right.

Quebec Solidaire, in its Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois version, dreamed of taking the place of the official opposition. It’s not unthinkable, but it’s highly unlikely. The party has failed to woo the middle class, without which a majority is unthinkable.

PSPP

Finally, the real event of this election is undoubtedly the rebirth of the Parti Québécois, led by its leader Paul Saint-Pierre Plamondon, whom many see, with good reason, as the new Jacques Pariseau.

Election campaigning can be surprising.

It remains to be seen whether this victory will translate into electoral victories with the support of the separatists. This is the real suspense for Monday evening.
