Longueil residents may be banned from building wood fires in their backyards by next summer.
Longueil Mayor, Sylvie Parent, announced her intention to ban wood fires outside the entire city of more than 230,000 residents during the last municipal council on February 16th.
“I appeal to the leadership of the three borough presidents (Vieux-Longuil, Saint-Hubert and Greenfield Park) and ask them to agree on a common word for a resolution supporting the passage of a” city “by-law that bans. Announced Meyers on the Facebook page.
“We want this regulation for environmental and public health considerations,” explained Mayor Press Secretary Alexandra Lapierre, whose goal is to combat the effects of fine particles emitted by wood burning. Elected officials will have to vote and we want them to vote before the summer season. ”
Javier Leger, Leader of the Opposition for the City of Languele, believes the mayors should pay attention to the specifics of the three boroughs in order to establish consensus.
He explained that the Vieques-Longuil borough wants to ban fires outside the timber, while Greenfield Park favors a ban, but requires public consultation before taking action.
The Borough of Saint-Hubert, seeks a more serious framework, but is not currently banned.
“Everyone is going in the right direction, but there are still specific requirements,” Mr Leger said, adding that the mayor’s party (Action Language) has four elected members, the opposition party (Language Sitoen) has five and six independents as advisers, as well as one vacant seat.
Also note that the cities of Montreal, Saint-Bruno-de-Monterville, Boucherville and Brosard have banned open wood fires.
