44 Major construction sites: Expect another chaotic summer on Greater Montreal roads

Motorists can expect another chaotic summer with 44 major construction sites disrupting travel in Greater Montreal.

Two sectors are particularly hot: downtown Montreal, as well as Highway 40 between Acadie and Decory boulevards, with 200,000 vehicles per day.

In this sensitive sector, two full weekend closures of the Montreal airport side are planned between now and the fall, the first of which is May 17 to 21 during the Parish Long Weekend.

“We have to be very far-sighted, leave early, because it will be a very crowded sector,” warned Sarah Bensadown, spokeswoman for the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, during the annual press briefing of the presentation of spring and summer projects.

In the West Island, full closures of Highway 40, including the Île-aux-Tourtes bridge, are also expected for some weekends.

Work is also continuing in the area of the Honoré-Mercier bridge, which will result in at least eight weekend closures.

Orange cones in the city centre

In downtown Montreal, rue Saint-Antoine and rue Saint-Jacques, near rue de Courcelle and avenue Atwater, are causing headaches for road users with construction work that will continue until June 2026.

This is without counting the construction site on Sainte-Catherine Street, which has been going on for a second year, and several other local projects, including the SRB on Pi-IX and Henri-Bourassa boulevards.

Last year, 51 major construction sites disrupted roads during the summer, making traffic from the Saint-Pierre interchange and the Honoré-Mercier bridge, the Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine bridge-tunnel, the city center particularly difficult. The central section of Highway 40 and the interchange of Highways 15 and 440 in Laval.
