There were 3,349 asylum applications and interceptions in Quebec in May alone. Since January 1, 2022, more than 13,000 migrants have crossed through Roxham Road in Saint-Bernard-de-Lacol, an unusual route.

According to the CIUSSS du Center-Ouest-de-l’Île-de-Montréal, 1,150 of the 1,200 beds are occupied by immigrants in the Montreal area, particularly at the Place Dupuis Hotel.

“We are making great efforts to adequately welcome newcomers and provide them with opportunities, so waiting times of more than 12 months are not allowed. Quebec’s reception capacity is not unlimited and, with the large and steady arrivals of the past few weeks, accommodation capacity has been reached,” wrote Labor Minister Jean Boulet.

“I hope the federal government will maintain its commitment to not strain our resources, and for this reason I have requested the transfer of some refugees to temporary accommodation in Ontario. To date, 520 refugees have been transferred to hotels in Ontario,” he continued in his statement.
