6 tips to preserve your food and save money

6 tips to preserve your food and save money

The couple, who live in a municipality 10 hours (round trip) from a grocery store in the Yukon, share their tips for making your food last longer.

1) Plan carefully

Before heading out for groceries, review your inventory from the freezer to the pantry. Then write down what you have and what you want. This allows you to save money, avoid impulse buys and reduce food waste.

2) Organize by due date

To avoid losing food, you can reorganize your fridge by making all food items visible. You can also write down due dates, so you don’t forget.

3) Prepare your meals in advance and in large portions (“batch-cooking”)

You can prepare everyday meals (lentil soup, roasted vegetables) and more special meals (risotto, quiche, for example). Then you can freeze it all.

4) Stock your freezer and pantry

Buy essential products (meat, fish, fruits, vegetables, milk, butter, etc.) that you can keep in the freezer and in your pantry (canned vegetables, dried products, basic products for cooking).

5) Be creative

Prioritize your fresh foods when cooking. When your stock is sold, you can add your frozen products to your recipes.

6) Prepare your own food

By growing your own food (green vegetables, root vegetables, for example) you can reduce the risk of wastage. Also, creating your own bread or granola, for example, at home will cost you less.
