Quebec announced Tuesday that a court has ordered ten tobacco smugglers to pay fines of more than $ 1.1 million and that four of them have also been jailed.
10 criminals have been charged with selling, distributing, transporting or possessing tobacco intended for retail sale in Quebec and the package has not been identified under the Tobacco Tax Act.
Furthermore, smugglers are not licensed to engage in commercial activities related to tobacco products.
A hefty fine was given to Francis Dagenice of Blaineville. A 30-year-old man will have to pay Rs 2,282,052.30 for his arrest while driving a vehicle containing nearly two tonnes of contraband tobacco in 2018 in the Buharnois sector.
The court convicted Mariel Papino, 63, a smuggler from Rockston Pond; Marco Tremble, 55, of Sagune, and Michael Ronalds, 40, of Listguzz, were fined between S 158,000 and 8,000 192,000.
Four offenders were jailed because some of them were repeat offenders in illicit tobacco.
Marco Tremblay, who had to spend eight months behind bars, was given the harshest sentence.
