(Trelev) The Patagonian pond retained its pink color on Sunday as fishing companies dumped chemicals in the area, a phenomenon that has alarmed local populations in the area in southern Argentina.
“For us, this is a picture of the negligence of the provincial authorities.
Covering an area of 10 to 15 hectares, Carpo Lagoon is located 30 kilometers from Trelev, a town of 120,000 residents in Chubut Province.
This color is explained by the presence of sodium sulfite, an antibacterial preservative used to store longostines before export, which contaminates the groundwater of the Chubat River.
Locals complained about the stench and the spread of insects.
“A company (which transports emissions from fishing companies) has the authority to release liquids into the carpo pond. The red color is damaged and will disappear in a few days,” Juan Micheloud, the provincial environmental control officer, said last week.
