Haven’t heard of “French Tacos” yet? It’s only time.
Filled with fries and cheese sauce, these sandwiches were invented fifteen years ago in the suburbs of Lyon.
In Quebec, at least two restaurant chains (Mont Tacos and French Tacos) are already dedicated to this dish.
Fries in a sandwich? This may come as a surprise.
To confirm this newcomer to the menu, I asked the opinion of our kitchen doyenne: Sister Angel.
At the word tacos, the 83-year-old nun thought of Mexican cuisine. I had to abuse her.

French tacos are mostly fries and cheese sauce.
Because “French tacos” have a misleading name. It’s not a taco. But instead of a burrito, a tortilla is a garnish packed with various meats, cold cuts, vegetables, along with the famous fries and cheese sauce, then baked.
” Oh my God ! Sister Angel was surprised to hear this description of a hybrid between a kebab, a burrito and a panini.
“I’ve never had a sandwich with fries! This piques my curiosity! »
At Snatch Tacos
Soeur Angel accompanied me to Snatch Tacos on Boulevard Saint-Laurent in the heart of Petit-France.
The wonderful name of this restaurant refers to the movie Snap (tu braques ou tu raques in French) by Guy Ritchie, to which the owner has devoted a cult following.
Driving with Sister Angel as a passenger, I’m as careful as a priest in his big cream Buick.
“It’s okay if French tacos aren’t tacos!” She said with a smile. Actually there is shepherd’s pie, it’s not Chinese or pie, it’s just a matter of habit! »

Another fact of our cousins tacos: the French who talk about it always say tacos, by stretching the final s.
“It’s the fries and the cheesy sauce that really define tacos, and the rest — vegetables, meats, spices — can vary almost infinitely,” Ms.me Abbar.
She arrived two years ago and immediately opened her restaurant amid the pandemic.

While Sister Angel’s tacos are pastrami and minced meat, mine has marinated chicken and merguez sausages… yum!
“It’s nourishing and comforting with a complete meal that fits in your hand,” commented Sister Angel. I never thought of putting fries in a sandwich, but it works! »
“Some customers refuse to add fries to a sandwich,” laments M.me Abbar.
Immigrated to Quebec 65 years agome Abber recalls another culinary scandal involving Sister Angel fries: the appearance of poutine.
“It shocked people so much, Putin, now people are talking about it in China or Egypt! »
“There may be people who snub French tacos, but this dish has the potential to take over the world!”
If Sister Angel says… Amen!
