A year’s flight to Pastor Mukhendi

A year's flight to Pastor Mukhendi

A year ago, Pastor Paul Mukendi was due to begin an eight-year prison sentence for multiple sexual abuse of a former believer, but instead fled to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

However, a year later, the pastor is still berating the Canadian authorities, and on a recurring basis.

In the country of his birth, the fugitive lives as a free man. He is still very active on social media where he promotes his meetings and activities with his followers.

The Service de Police de la Ville de Quebec (SPVQ) had little to say about the investigation, but said it was still ongoing.

“Investigations are still ongoing on the part of the SPVQ to identify Mr Mukhendi. However, we will not comment further on the file or the methods we use, so as not to harm our efforts. If there is an arrest or any significant development, we will communicate with you,” the SPVQ indicated.

The victims are treated harshly

According to an activist from the Center for Assistance to Victims of Criminal Action (CAVAC), an investigation stretched over months and years in this way takes a toll on victims as well.

“When it spreads over time, it does not seem to be progressing, it is more difficult for the victim to cope. She may have the feeling that it is impossible to find balance in her life,” explained Marie-Christine Villeneuve, CAVAC’s communications coordinator.
