Celine Galipio called and wrote a letter to her friend Lisa Laflamme after she was fired as anchor of CTV National News because of her gray hair.
Celine Galipio was “thrown to the ground” and “shocked” by Bell Media’s firing of Lisa Laflamme, head of the “Telejournal” antenna since 2009.
“In 2022, how can we deal with a woman with her experience who is at the top of the ratings with the most watched bulletin in the country?” She told QMI Agency during the launch of information programs on Radio-Canada on Tuesday in Montreal.
For her part, the 65-year-old “never felt any pressure” from the management or the public over the years. “I am living proof of that: today you will be old on screen. […] Gray hair, why not? We need to make an announcement: All female anchors will wear gray wigs for one night in support of Lisa LaFlamme. Let me start the challenge! “
Céline Galipeau has “enormous respect” for Lisa Laflamme, who has received many awards and whom she often met in the field, especially in Afghanistan. Both women have a similar background in that they were foreign correspondents before returning home to run a large late-night bulletin.
Was Lisa LaFlamme a victim of ageism and sexism, considering that at 58, she wanted to continue her career and still had two years left on her contract? “Pierre Bruno left when he was ready to leave, and for TVA management to fire him when he was at the top of his game would have been absolutely crazy. Lisa LaFlamme’s file is hard to fathom,” added Celine Galipio, who is considering what to do next.
Finally retire
During her vacation, the head of the “Telejournal” antenna was replaced by Madeleine Blais-Morin, Marie-Maud Denis, Catherine Mercier and Véronique Prince, which “confronted” her long before the Lisa Laflamme affair during his retirement.
“[…] I tell myself that I will eventually start planning my exit because I won’t be here forever. It’s funny to say, but I grew up and grew up in Radio-Canada and I never felt any pressure from management or people because of my age. For the first time this summer, I also felt a sense of freshness when I saw other journalists with the same energy that “Telejournal” brings, without outside pressure.
Bell Media will conduct an independent assessment after ousting Lisa Laflamme after 35 years with CTV News. In a statement, the company said, “In the atmosphere [la] Newsroom” will be analyzed “in the coming weeks”.
In addition to her gray hair, she also reportedly stood up to her new boss, Michael Melling, over budget cuts inherent in news coverage and editorial choices.
Anne-Marie Dussault, who helmed the show “24/60” for its 15th season at RDI, believes that Lisa LaFlamme is “amazing” with her gray hair, as does Celine Galipeau. We don’t know all the facts, perhaps a confidentiality agreement was signed between the parties, she recalled.
“I can give you my word that it’s not a factor here [les cheveux gris]. We are beyond that. Information has long been implemented by women, we age well in the air, we accept age in the air. I am 69 years old, so definitely if I decide to go gray, white, I will do it without any worries,” she said about “personal choice”.
“Nobody tells you how to dress, how to do your hair, how to do your makeup. Jane Fonda has never looked so beautiful [à 84 ans]Lisa LaFlamme is beautiful in gray, I didn’t think she would take the risk.
