Addressing the Communist Party Congress in Beijing, President Xi Jinping vowed on Sunday that China would try to reunify Taiwan peacefully, but would “never give up the use of force” if necessary.
“We will work with the utmost sincerity and great efforts for the peaceful reunification (of Taiwan), but we will never give up the use of force and we have the opportunity to take all necessary measures,” he said.
Beijing considers Taiwan an integral part of its territory and regularly reiterates its intention to reunify the island.
“The resolution of the Taiwan question is the business of the Chinese people and (it) should be resolved only by the Chinese people,” hammered Xi Jinping on Sunday.
“The reunification of the motherland must be achieved and achieved,” he added, condemning any foreign “separatism and interference” in the matter.
Xi Jinping also praised Hong Kong’s transition from “chaos to rule” since the imposition of the National Security Law in 2020, which has clamped down on dissent in the territory.
“The situation in Hong Kong has achieved a major transition from chaos to governance,” he said.
