To relieve the burden on doctors, Specialized Nurse Practitioners (IPS) will no longer need acute care for patients waiting for a place in the residential center at the Geriatrics Department of Suroit Hospital in Valleyfield, Monterrey.
On Tuesday, there were 12 of them in this situation, and the unit has 36 beds. Patients with this condition stay in the hospital for an average of 25 to 40 days.
“I had lung cancer and I had a pulmonary embolism, and I caught Covid,” explained patient Rose-Mae Boisclair.
These IPSs take care of them during their on-call periods, for a week.
“This is a very innovative project, we are the first in Quebec. During his time here, if the patient is stable, it is really self-care of IPS. The doctor was not questioned at any level. If the patient is decompensated, IPS welcomes the doctor on duty,” says nurse Annabelle Rioux.
Isabelle Hubert was the first IPS to participate in the project.
“We have time to review their pharmacology, their medication list. Often, they also improve, we re-evaluate and we find an environment where it is perhaps, sometimes easier to find them, because they are less burdened in terms of losing autonomy.
The project, which has been gradually implemented over the past four years, is now attracting the interest of other CISSSs and CIUSSSs in Quebec.
