Let’s imagine said PQ membersOnly those standing are expelled from the Blue Room By Sergeant-at-ArmsNov. 29, because they try to sit out of obedience to King Charles III.

It’s a scene worthy of the bad picture that awaits the PQ’s elected officials. This follows the decision of the outgoing president of the National Assembly, Francois Paradis, who did not allow any interview to explain himself.

The stench of bad faith and prejudice Mr. Paradis’ position also occurs in the midst of a transitional period. Parliamentarians will indeed be called upon to appoint his successor as soon as work resumes.

A rare gesture

According to Jocelyn Saint-Pierre, a historian and author who retired from managing the National Assembly library, scenes of expulsion from the Blue Room have only been mentioned three times in Quebec history.

This happened in 1909 when journalist Olivier Asselin punched Minister Louis-Alexandre Taschereau (future Prime Minister) in the face on the floor of the House of Commons. He blames her for lying about him in the bedroom.

Then, in 1965, Yves Gabias, deputy of Trois-Rivières, was expelled for corruption charges against regional prosecutor René Hamel.

Finally, in 2009, Prime Minister Jean Charest threatened to expel the now deceased Lotbinier MP Sylvie Roy. She argued without evidence that Transport Minister Julie Boulet had been on Tony Accurso’s boat.

For a residue

So in 2022, is it really justified to expel elected officials from the Blue Room for refusing to respect relics of the colonial era?

This question is raised even more by the fact that 74% of Quebecers favor the abolition of the monarchy in Canada. And the CAQ, in 2015, expressed its intention to abolish the post of lieutenant-governor. It is high time to put an end to this circus and cancel this old obligation.
