CAQ Help: “This is the last time we write a cheque”

Finance Minister Eric Girard announced Thursday afternoon that this would be the last time the François Legault government would hand out a check to Quebecers.

“This is the last time we will write a check like this as next year’s tax rate is indexed to this year’s inflation. It has to be said that inflation will be lower next year compared to this year,” the minister confirmed to QUB Radio.

Eric Girard admitted the reasons why the Coalition Avenir Quebec (CAQ) sent compensation this year, because “the index level of the tax system this year was determined before the invasion of Ukraine by Russia and before its effect. Omicron variant on supply chains”, he explained on the microphone of Mario Dumont.

Paying compensation to millions of Quebecers was a measure the provincial government eyed last spring.

“This is part of our election platform. Inflation is around 7%, so we want to help people consume a basket of essentials.

Remember that 71% of Quebecers will benefit from the $600 check promised by the CAQ, which represents approximately 4.6 million people across the province.

“We have models to measure the impact on inflation. The measure’s impact on inflation is estimated at less than 0.1%. People who say it’s an inflation measure haven’t done their math.”
