Amid a shortage of nurses, nursing students are angry with their professional order after a large number failed the exam to be granted the right to practise.

“I was in shock,” said Lorien Gaul-Dorian, 23, a class leader who attended three years of college with an average of 85%.
She was part of a group of nurses who took the professional examination of the Order of Nurses of Quebec (OIIQ) at the end of September 2022. The success rate is starving, just over 51%.
Without passing this exam, they cannot practice as a nurse. Many of these failures also come as Quebec faces a severe shortage of staff, forcing many hospitals to cut services.
However, over three years, the pass rate in the same test fluctuated from 96 to 71% for the previous cohort. “It’s unfair and it’s not normal for one of two people to drown,” Ms. Gall-Dorian continues.
“It doesn’t reflect the reality of the ground, it’s not what we learn in school”, says Jossian Georges in tears talking about her failure.
The 40-year-old mother dedicated dozens of hours a day to studying for the test, even paid for extra training and took time off from her hospital job to increase her chances of passing.
But she got only 52%… 55% is needed to pass.
22-year-old Joel Girard started an online petition after failing to denounce the situation. First, she wants to reduce the pass mark to 50% because she knows many colleagues who have failed with 51 to 54% marks.
More than 1500 people have already signed.
A student from Sorrell-Tracy explained that Order’s test uses “clinical judgment” with answer selection. She argues that many options are “good”, but only one is “best” according to the order.
However, several nurses interviewed by Lay Journal felt the test was disconnected from the reality on the ground.
“We’re not dangerous, we know what we’re doing,” Ms. Girard continues, saying that all candidates for the exam have previously passed their studies and are already working in hospitals.
As of press time, OIIQ is yet to comment. Journal should talk to them in the afternoon.
