More than 200,000 Montreal households lost power (and thus fans and air conditioning) Thursday afternoon, while the metropolis continues to grapple with intense heat. About a fifth of Montreal households found themselves temporarily without power.
By 4:30 p.m. they were only about 135,000, down from just 1,250 earlier in the evening.
Particularly affected were the boroughs of Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce and Saint-Laurent, as well as the cities of Côte Saint-Luc, Hampstead, Kirkland, Beaconsfield and Pointe-Claire.
At the Montreal airport, flights to the United States were grounded due to the disruption. “Please contact your airline to confirm flight schedules,” the airport said on its Twitter account.
Hydro-Québec blames it on “triggering a protection mechanism on one of our high voltage transmission lines.” “Analysis continues [en] The exact reason is known,” the state corporation said.
Voltage recovery is in progress on the affected high-voltage line. We can begin restoring service in affected neighborhoods soon. Most of the affected customers should have service restored by late afternoon or early evening.…
