In Quebec, it's time to declare your fireplace or wood stove

If you live in Quebec and own a wood heating appliance, you must declare it by 1^er April Of about 25,000 stoves or fireplaces in the capital, 1,522 have been registered by their owner since their declaration became mandatory.

From 1^er Last January, owners of wood stoves and fireplaces had to register their appliance in Quebec City using an online form. Therefore we want to better control the emissions of fine pollutant particles caused by heating wood.

The municipality does not have an accurate picture of the number of wood heating appliances in its territory and with this compulsory registration campaign, it hopes to create a more accurate list, the vice president of the executive indicated in November. 25,000 devices

Quebec has an estimated 25,000 devices. Of this number, between 2,500 and 8,500 stoves are uncertified. From 2026, their use will be banned.

Of the 1,522 appliances declared, according to city statistics, most were wood stoves (586) or fireplaces with a built-in appliance (543). Masonry fireplaces of bricks or stones follow (257).

Owners who advertise their device must indicate which category it falls into. “Useful information is available online to identify devices,” suggests city spokesman Jean-Pascal Lavoie. If the request is completed, a response will be given within 5 working days.

If in doubt, citizens can call 311 and information will be emailed to them. “Following the declaration, citizens who do not know which category their device falls into and who do not contact 311 will be contacted by the City to identify the device they have,” Mr. Lavoie said.

Exceptions

All devices must be declared. But with regard to use, some of them benefit from exemption and can continue to be used without restriction except during fog episodes. This is the case for wood stoves, outdoor fireplaces, communal fireplaces, maple evaporators and anthracite fireplaces.

Relevant appliances are those that burn wood, wood pellets, coal or other fuels in gaseous or liquid form.

Upcoming Bans:

Wood stoves, furnaces and boilers are intended for heating

• From 1^er September 2026: Only CSA or EPA certified devices can be used.

Non-certified decorative or ambient wood fireplaces

• From 1^er January 2024: Ban on installing stoves unless purchased before this date
• From 1^er September 2030: Ban on their use.
