Calgary Launches New 500-Series Express Bus Network

Calgary Transit has introduced a new family of express bus routes designed to shorten travel times and improve connections across the city’s public transit network. The service will provide direct, limited-stop trips while operating in both directions throughout the day.

Route 503 Connects Symons Valley Communities with Downtown

The first service in the new network, Route 503 Symons Valley Express, began operating Monday. It connects Sage Hill and neighbouring communities in north Calgary with the downtown core.

The route offers limited-stop service, giving passengers a faster and more direct option for travelling between the growing Symons Valley area and central Calgary.

The city developed the service following recommendations from the North Central Transit Service Review, which examined changing travel patterns and public transit needs in communities across north-central Calgary.

Airport Bus Renamed Route 500 Airport Express

As part of the rollout, Calgary Transit is renaming Route 300 Airport/City Centre as Route 500 Airport Express.

The change establishes the numbering system for what the city says will become a broader network of express bus routes. Future services added to the program are expected to use the 500-series designation.

The Airport Express will continue to provide an important connection between Calgary International Airport and the downtown area, serving travellers, airport employees and residents along the route.

Two-Way, All-Day Service Marks a New Approach

Calgary Transit’s traditional express routes generally focused on weekday peak periods, often carrying passengers in one primary direction during the morning and afternoon commutes.

The new 500-series model is intended to be more flexible. Routes will operate in both directions throughout the day, reflecting the increasingly varied schedules of Calgary workers, students and other transit users.

“The new 500-series gives customers the fast, direct service they value while better connecting them to the rest of our transit network. It is a smarter, more flexible approach that helps us serve more people, more efficiently,” Calgary Transit director Sharon Fleming said in a statement.

The expanded operating model could benefit passengers travelling outside conventional rush-hour periods, including shift workers and people making midday or reverse-direction trips.

Express Network Supports Calgary’s Long-Term Transit Plan

The new express bus network forms part of RouteAhead, Calgary Transit’s 30-year strategic plan for improving public transportation as the city’s population and urban footprint expand.

RouteAhead sets out long-term priorities for service improvements, network development and better access to transit. The 500-series is intended to complement existing bus and CTrain services by providing faster links between communities and key destinations.

Calgary Transit will monitor Route 503 to assess ridership, travel times, reliability and connections with other services. The results will help determine how future express routes are designed and where they could be introduced.

The city expects the 500-series network to expand into other parts of Calgary as growth continues and travel patterns evolve. Route 503 will serve as the first test of the new all-day, two-way express model and could shape how Calgary develops faster bus connections in the years ahead.
