A group of coronavirus cases in California were traced to cough patients at a birthday party

A large number of family members and friends were at the party, said the Pasadena Public Health Department news release, adding the event took place after the city issued home stay orders in March.

One patient at the party coughed and did not wear a face mask, health officials said, and other party guests also did not cover their faces or social distance.

“As a result, Covid-19 spread among party participants,” the department said.

Through contact tracing, investigators were able to identify more than five confirmed cases of the corona virus from the party and “more people were sick,” according to the health department.

“This is an example of how good contact tracing can identify groups of diseases and tell us more about the spread of disease in our community,” Dr. Matthew Feaster, an epidemiologist in the department.

More than 66,550 people have been infected with the virus in California and at least 2,687 have died, according to Johns Hopkins University.

“Although we are moving forward with minor modifications to the Safer at Home Order, meetings of people who do not live in the same house are still prohibited,” Dr. Ying-Ying Goh, department director and health officer, said. “This virus remains highly contagious. Social gaps, frequent hand washing, and wearing face masks remain our best defense against the spread of Covid-19 in our community.”
