SAINT-JÉRÔME | A young woman assaulted more than 1,000 times by her stepfather, now serving an eight-year prison sentence, has given moving testimony in court to describe the effects of the abuse on her life.
“I want you to know that I hate you. I will never forgive you,” the 26-year-old said last Thursday, looking her stepfather Eric Paquin-Carboneau straight in the eye. It was frozen in the Saint-Jerome courthouse.
The 37-year-old previously admitted to sexually touching, inducing and sexually assaulting his victim while in a position of power.
In total, Paquin-Carbonneau admitted to having less than 1,000 sexual encounters with his current spouse’s daughter between 2011 and 2017 in Mont-Laurier, Laval and Bois-des-Filions.
The victim sought the lifting of court orders barring her from mentioning her family relationship with the attacker.
He was already serving a sentence for sexually assaulting a minor in 2014, when he told his prison officer he had another victim.
secret relationship
At the time, he told his stepdaughter that their relationship was their “secret” and that he could give her “tricks” with men. He claims to have tucked her in the evening, before taking the opportunity to attack her.
“This man stole hundreds of nights of sleep from me. I often missed work because I didn’t sleep through the night,” she testified.
Even if he pleads, according to the suit, the repeat offender cannot fully acknowledge his responsibility.
“Manure shies away from his responsibility and says the victim provoked him. I remind you that we are talking about a 14-year-old. This is very disturbing,” said Crown Prosecutor Me Stephanie Gilbert.
Displaying a certain lack of empathy, Paquin-Carbonneau refuses to even acknowledge the impact of his actions on his victim’s life.
“What consequences? She was more affected by me not choosing her instead of her mother,” he said, according to a statement read by Mi Gilbert.
His victim, however, took care to repeat to him before the court “the hell” in which he had made him live for years.
“Because of you, there are days I still want to kill myself, days when I think it’s my fault, my body hates me. I hope you get what you deserve. You broke me,” she said.
Appreciated his courage
Judge Kathleen Gauthier thanked her for her bravery.
“Thanks for the report. You are a good example,” she complimented her.
The prosecution is seeking eight years in prison. The defense is asking for three to four years in prison instead.
“There is still a real way in which he has allowed himself to be condemned”, pleaded Sylvie Bordelais alike of his client.
►The magistrate will pronounce her sentence in Saint-Jerome next month.
