Abortion Rights: A Series on the Chantale Digley Affair

The new series “Disobe: Chantale Douglas Choice” takes us back to 1989, when the country was embroiled in a major legal battle until the Supreme Court for the right to abortion.

Thirty-three years later, that problem is solved for the majority of Canadians. Women have the right to control their bodies, but there are still many in Ottawa who are campaigning to ban abortions.

In this drama coming to Crave, the authors Daniel Thibault and Isabelle Pelletier (“Mirador”, “The Raptures”) deal with the Chantale Diegel affair, which has become a national and worldwide headline. The young woman was 21 when she became pregnant with Jean-Guy Tremble, described as “manipulative and aggressive”. She leaves him because their relationship is stormy and chooses to have an abortion.

The man does not see it that way, and seeks to continue his relationship with her, resorting to the courts without going to her abortion clinic. Trial Judge Mr. Agreed with Tremble, although the termination of the previous year was considered a crime. Chantale Digley was then plunged into a media storm.

In August 1989, the Supreme Court finally ruled that the fetus did not have the legal status of an individual. Note that Tremblay, who went to jail after the Chantal Diegel affair, was known in April 2012 for several counts of assault, forcible detention, and criminal harassment, as reported by the “Le Journal de Quebec”.

The cast of “Disobeer: Chantale Diggles Choice” is yet to be revealed. Filming is set to begin this summer.

Sophie Lorraine and Alexis Durand-Bralt’s ALSO Productions Company have been running the project since 2019, based on the original idea of ​​documentary filmmaker Gale D’Gingleymer.
