Activists still stick their hands to the ground at Montreal-Trudeau airport

For the third day in a row, environmental activists targeted the Montreal-Trudeau airport, once again holding hands on the tarmac and lining the taxiway leading to the terminal's exit on Friday afternoon.

“Sorry for the inconvenience – again! Our message is clear: oil is killing and our governments must ratify the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty,” the “Last Generation” group wrote on its X account earlier this afternoon.

This new aura began during the feast. Three activists wearing the environmental group's traditional pink jackets stick their hands on the tarmac in a traffic lane leading to an airport exit.

Their presence caused some confusion among motorists. Although hundreds of people identified themselves, they were caught in a massive traffic jam not only at the airport site but also on the surrounding motorway network.

Armed with hammer and chisels and nail polish remover, police officers dispatched to the scene gently removed the protesters' hands one by one to free them. Later in the afternoon, three people were arrested. Activists may now face a felony charge of rioting.

This is the third time in as many days that members of the “Lost Generation” group have attacked the Montreal-Trudeau airport.

On Monday, there was a heavy traffic jam in the area as activists laid hands on the tarmac near the airport landing stage.

It took several hours for the police to free them.

Then, on Thursday evening, activists from the same group sprayed the windows of the airport's departure area with washable pink paint before being intercepted by security agents. A 25-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman were arrested. Later they were released after promising to appear in court.

“These actions are part of the Oil Kills, an international revolt in favor of the Fossil Fuel Proliferation Treaty initiative, with simultaneous actions in North America and Europe,” the environmental group responded in a press release.

In an email response, Aéroports de Montréal (ADM) condemned the disruptive actions of the “Lost Generation”.

“We want to be very clear: compromising access to an airport that provides essential services at the expense of passengers is completely unacceptable. We condemn the fact that the site is being targeted by this action when the group is trying to get the attention of the federal government and this is a very broad social debate. We will initiate legal action.”

“Considering the major impacts caused by the last generation's actions on passengers at YUL, ADM has obtained a temporary injunction to prevent these types of activities/demonstrations or other activities on the airport's territory (land and air side) from being disrupted.” Aéroports de Montréal added.
