The Canadian Forces National Investigation Service (CFNIS) has formally launched an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct against former Chief of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Jonathan Vance.
“We can confirm that the CFNIS is investigating the matter,” a military spokesman told Global News on Thursday.
“To protect the integrity of the investigation process, no additional information will be provided at this time,” the man said.
Global reported Tuesday that Jonathan Vance was convicted of indecent exposure with two subordinate women from 2019 to January 2021. The woman affected by the alleged relationship wants to remain anonymous, but she confirmed to Global to meet with military police on Thursday.
In 2012, three years before Stephen Harper’s was appointed Chief of Staff of the Conservative government, General Vance also made a sexual remark via email to a young soldier.
Mr Vance, who served as chief of staff of the CAF (Canadian Armed Forces) from July 2015 to January, denied the allegations he was targeting, saying the alleged relationship was not sexual. As for the email, he said he had no memory of it and suggested a joke.
The CAF is plagued by numerous sexual harassment scandals. A Statistics Canada survey of 36,000 military personnel unveiled in 2019 found that 1.6% of regular CAF members were sexually harassed between Fall 2017 and Fall 2018, almost twice as many as the civilian population.
