China: Running elephants waiting for Laticomer

Beijing, China | A herd of elephants attracting China stops forcibly while waiting for one of its conjurers, pulling its leg and is now 14 kilometers away from the rest of the herd.

Since leaving their reserve at Jishuangbanna on the Laos-Burma border earlier this year, 15 Pachyderms, including three herds of elephants, have already traveled more than 500 kilometers southwest of the country.

Peregrine puts China in suspense, with its national television, CCTV, broadcasting the herd’s actions live on the Internet 24 hours a day.

The ten young men, however, left the rest of the troops at the beginning of the month and further away from them. CCTV reported that the herd’s females had slowed down in recent days, taking a break near a village about 90 kilometers south of Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province.

Chen Mingyang, a professor at Yunnan University, told the Kyxin website that the elephants had tried to call the straggler with their trunks.

But Laticomer did not accelerate his race. Young children usually leave the herd to live alone when they reach sexual maturity.

The elephant parade is constantly monitored by drones and hundreds of officers intervene to evacuate the population on their way. As a precaution already several thousand people had to leave their homes.

The animals appear to be healthy and no one was injured as they entered the town, crossed the roads and visited barns and houses for food.

The damage to agriculture caused by their travel has already been estimated at nearly one million euros.

As the rainy season makes walking harder, experts quoted the Global Times daily on Tuesday, warning that pachyderms may not return to their homeland before winter.

Meanwhile, “away from the population, it is best to find more suitable habitats for them and attract them there,” Zhang Li, a biologist at Beijing General University, told the newspaper.
