Collapse in Florida: Is Quebec Safe?

In Montreal, there are dozens of skyscrapers and a large number of multi-storey residential buildings.

Without experiencing the drama comparable to the surfside, the Quebec metropolis is a scene of some of the most overpriced events over the years.

In May 2020, a massive concrete block collapsed after splitting from the 17th^E Floor of office building.

In July 2009, a tragic end came in the downtown area when a concrete block fell while a woman was dining at a restaurant.

Rules to be tightened

In Quebec, it is mandatory to inspect and maintain the facades of land of five floors and above under the Building Chapter of the Security Code. The employer must obtain a facade inspection report every five years.

“After that, he can make a report, such as certification or denial of dangerous conditions,” explained Claude Guertin, ProspectPlus’ engineer and general manager. Wyatt News.

The latter reminds us, too, that we are never safe from structural failure.

Inspection is required to prevent debris.

“When we look at the parking space, there are structural elements such as the building’s barriers, structure, foundations, beams, [les] Pillars, foundation walls, etc., ”said Claude Guertin.

“Actually, when you look at the facades, it’s the building envelope, not necessarily the structure. It does not give us a complete confirmation of the structural condition of the building, ”he said.

The engineer was of the opinion that there should be a responsibility to examine the structural elements of the building which were in some way obsolete.

“I think it’s a very small thing,” Claude Guertin declared.
