Montreal police deployed a low-flying helicopter to patrol some parks and neighborhoods in Montreal on Friday evening, leaving residents distraught by the noise.
The Service de Police de la Ville de Montreal (SPVM) says that the existence of an aircraft borrowed from the Certe du Quebec (SQ) is necessary “to give itself visibility”.
“We agree that the territory is large enough,” said police spokesman Veronica Comtois. “Some places are particularly targeted, for example we had some events last week in Old Montreal.”
Late in the evening, at 11pm, the helicopter flies over Jean-Mans Park on the Plateau-Mont-Royal. Noise was heard loudly in the residential areas surrounding the park. At 11:40 pm, the craft went to La Fontaine Park.
On the internet, many residents expressed their incomprehensible and anger at the presence of a very quiet helicopter flying at low altitude very late in the evening.
Curfew has been lifted in some parts of Montreal in recent days, especially overflow in Old Montreal.
