Disappearance of teacher while jogging: Suspect charged with kidnapping

A man has been arrested and charged with kidnapping in connection with the disappearance of a teacher from Memphis, United States, while jogging on Friday morning.

“Cliotha Abston, 38, is charged with aggravated kidnapping and tampering with evidence,” the Memphis, Tenn., police department said in a Twitter post.

Eliza Fletcher, 34, was jogging around 4:30 a.m. Friday when she was approached by an unidentified man, CNN reported.

The police said earlier that she was forced into a dark mid-size SUV and taken away from the scene.

According to CNN, the suspect was arrested after police found a vehicle that had been searched since Friday in connection with Eliza Fletcher’s disappearance.

Photos posted on social media by the Memphis Police Department show the young woman walking in a neighborhood near the University of Memphis.

She was last seen wearing a pink sports top and purple running shorts, according to an alert issued by police last Friday.

The kindergarten teacher’s damaged cellphone was found near the scene of her alleged kidnapping, the Crimestoppers chief executive said in a statement obtained by CNN.

According to a Memphis Police Department Twitter post, the young woman has not yet been located and the investigation is still ongoing.
