The incident, which took place at a remote crossing in the mountains close to Tibet, was the latest in a long line of border disputes between the two neighboring forces.

“Aggressive behavior by both sides resulted in minor injuries to the troops,” the spokesman said.

“The two sides broke away after dialogue and interaction at the local level. The forces resolved such problems according to the protocol established,” the spokesman added.

Eleven soldiers, four Indians and seven Chinese, were reported injured, which occurred during a patrol in Nuka La, North Sikkim, according to CNN News affiliate18.

An Indian ministry spokesman said “temporary and short” battles between troops from the two countries were a common occurrence due to the fact that “boundaries were not resolved.”

CNN has requested comments from the Chinese foreign ministry.

India and China share one of the longest land borders in the world. In 1962, the two countries engaged in a bloody Himalayan border war and fighting continued sporadically for decades since.

In 2017, both parties were involved in months of regional stalemate in the disputed highlands of Doklam, on the unmarked border between China and Bhutan.

Although not part of Indian territory, the area is close to a “chicken neck,” a strategic corridor that functions as a vital artery between Delhi and its northeastern states.

After months of rising tensions and direct shooting exercises, the two governments finally agreed to resign in August 2017. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping agreed to work together to avoid further border disputes in 2018.
But despite the agreement, tensions continue. As recently as September 2019, Indian and Chinese troops were involved “fight” on the border near Lake Pangong in the Himalayas, according to News18.
