Joe Biden is expected to travel to Houston on Monday with the family of George Floyd, a statement that his death while in police custody has sparked protests against police brutality throughout the country and around the world.
The former vice president chose a private meeting because he did not want his secret service security details to disrupt the family’s funeral, and he wanted to pay homage to himself. CBS News reports Sunday.
His spokesman told the store that Biden would record the video message for the funeral.
This is the first time Biden has traveled beyond his home in the Delaware and Philadelphia region since the lockout to combat the coronavirus virus went into effect in March.
He delivers interviews from a studio set up in the basement of his Wilmington home, appearing on talk shows and conducting virtual meetings.
Floyd died on May 25 after a former Minneapolis police officer squeezed his knee for more than eight minutes.
A second-degree murder case has been filed against Derek Chuvv, who was fired with three officers involved in detaining Floyd.
Since then, protests have taken place in 50 states, large and small cities – the United Kingdom, France and Germany.
Memorial services for Floyd have already taken place in Minneapolis and North Carolina.
The public viewing will take place on Monday and the invitation-only service will be held on Tuesday.
