BRUGES | Quebec’s mayor downplayed the consequences of abandoning the Innovitum project and hopes the Quebec government will help economically develop the city’s eastern sector.
Finance Minister Pierre Fitzgibbon confirmed to Radio-Canada that the government will not move forward with the creation of an innovation zone in the city’s eastern district, a project the municipality has named “Innovitum.” It has been declining for a few months. It is “not relevant,” and there are other projects for the Quebec region, the minister told the state corporation.
For Mayor Bruno Marchand, that doesn’t mean the city won’t develop the east side or that 15 sites are polluted for nothing.

“We are going to develop this sector. We will. This is the field of the future. Now, the question of financing, whether it’s Innovitum or Machine Owl, the important thing for me is that the government supports us. When Mr. Fitzgibbon said there were going to be other projects in Quebec, we were going to work on him and we were going to take him at his word and we were going to hope it was going to be in Quebec.
The minister cited Rabaska land in Lewes. Concerned opposition leader Claude Villeneuve, who fears this will favor Lévis’ capital. From Bruges, where he was on a mission, the mayor responded.
Unsurpassed by Lewis
“You don’t have the confidence to think you’re being overtaken by Lévis. Quebec is a capital, more than its fair share. And Lévis is growing, which is a good thing.
The land had to be contaminated anyway, the mayor dictated. It is possible to eliminate homes and gardens that cannot be created on contaminated land.”
He now expects concrete steps from the government. “Money from the Quebec government to support economic development is important.”
Asked Thursday about leaving Innovitum, the transportation minister, Genevieve Guilbault, confirmed that “there are a lot of projects” for the greater Capital-National region.
She cited the Metropolitan Economic Zone, which aims to “attract investments, businesses, foreign students and major events” to Quebec and Lévis.
