Long leave: WestJet cancels flights at wrong time

Canadian airline WestJet has canceled several scheduled flights ahead of the long weekend due to disruption as its pilots prepare to strike.

The nation’s second-largest carrier has decided to ground most of Boeing’s 737 and 787 planes in light of a strike by pilots fighting for better wages, Bloomberg reported.

The move comes at a typically busy time for airlines in Canada. Negotiations are still ongoing, but no compromise has yet been reached and the deadline is Friday at 5 a.m. Toronto time.

WestJet Link and WestJet Encore, which use smaller aircraft to refuel flights, will continue to operate. However, the paralysis affects WestJet’s low-cost arm swoop.

We can read in a press release that the pilots are “unreasonably paid which has lasting and detrimental consequences on the financial viability of the group”.

More than 1,800 pilots are demanding salaries closer to their American counterparts. Recall that in February, Delta Air Lines approved a 34% wage increase as part of a new four-year contract.
